With Texas heat right around the corner, I wanted to refresh my patio into a space I actually want to spend time in.
Nothing major—just a few simple changes that made a big difference.
I’ve been slowly refreshing my patio for spring, and it’s quickly becoming one of my favorite places to relax. Living in Texas, I wanted something that could handle the heat but still feel cozy and inviting.
Here’s a look at what I updated and a few simple ideas if you’re looking to refresh your own outdoor space.
I’ve realized how much even a small outdoor space can change how you enjoy your home.

Planters & Layout
I kept things simple and focused on a few larger planters instead of lots of smaller ones. It makes the space feel cleaner and more intentional.
I also played around with placement to make sure everything felt balanced without being too symmetrical.
I’ve always been drawn to a more simple, uncluttered look, and this approach helped everything feel more pulled together.

Plants That Work Well in Texas Heat
Choosing the right plants makes all the difference here in Texas. I looked for options that can handle full sun and still look good throughout the season.
I’m definitely not an expert gardener, so I try to stick with plants that are easy to care for and can handle a little inconsistency.
These have been great so far and are easy to maintain.

Simple Placement Tips
One thing I’ve learned (sometimes the hard way) is that placement matters just as much as what you plant.
A few things that helped:
- Grouping planters in odd numbers
- Mixing heights for visual interest
- Leaving some open space so it doesn’t feel crowded
A few things that really helped pull this space together:

Outdoor Rug
I love the color this rug adds to the patio—it instantly made the space feel warmer and more inviting.

Concrete Planters
These concrete planters really anchor the space and give it a more finished, grounded look.

Raised Bed Planter
I chose this raised bed planter to keep the rabbits (and maybe Clifford too) out of the vegetables. The height also makes it so much easier to plant and maintain.
I’m really happy with how this space is coming together, and I know I’ll be spending a lot more time out here this summer.
If you’re working on your own patio or outdoor space, I’d love to hear what you’re adding this season.
